USA on the Edge of Chaos!?

I always thought I had a good idea what Tainter and (to some extent) Beck were alluding to when referring to “elites”, essentially, bringing the house down rather than give up what they have grown so accustomed to viewing as theirs to do with what they liked. But this piece is mind-blowing and so blatant SOMEONE needs to call a halt to it all now or the dollar won’t last until 2015 and I dread to think of the implications for US citizens….WikiLeaks exposing some truths should be the least of their worries.

Noam Chomsky has recently talked of the “profound hatred for democracy on the part of our Political leadership” and, more controversially drew comparisons with late Weimar Germany

As he says, he is no Economist but I have heard more FACTS, forthright and common sense opinion from him than from many proponents…that’s the Scots for you!

He reminds us Brits about the scale and pace of the decline of our Empire.

He tells Americans what you don’t want , but need to hear…without any political spin or Fed endorsed guesswork.

Chapter 4. Complexity Theory

Elements of this lecture reminded me of my recent blog “Disaster Myopia” but, of course, since starting blogging almost 2 years ago I have made several references to the work of Joseph Tainter (Collapse of Complex Societies) and to Ulrich Beck (The Risk Society)

Current societies…are characterised by their extreme complexity at a moment in history in which traditional political institutions have lost much of the power, a power which has now passed into the hands of multinational companies

WikiLeaks’ Most Terrifying Revelation: Just How Much Our Government Lies to Us

I am not an American citizen but I really don’t believe that "Government lies", particularly when it comes to warmongering,  are exclusively the domain of US! This is a matter that should concern every “global citizen”:

As important as is the issue of free speech, it is the question of whether the U.S. Executive is in fact protecting the American people through its mass murder abroad that really lies at the heart of the Wikileaks controversy. Executive Branch officials justify persecuting and threatening to murder Assange on the grounds that he has damaged U.S. "national security." If McChrystal is right, however, it is the past decade of U.S. Executive mass murder in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, now revealed beyond any doubt by Wikileaks, that is the real threat to U.S. national security.

I have been engaged in a lively debate on Linkedin:

"Is Julian Assange a vigilante free thinker and advocate for free press and open political disclosure or…a threat?"

Everyone is entitled to express their own opinion and many have. I have mine. I express it and am happy to provide evidence of the basis of my views because I am open to discussion and debate in the hope that I may learn, or, at least, share knowledge from which others may learn.

However, I find it alarming just how many educated people are happy to accept that the issue is – as their Government have portrayed it – the real or imagined danger to innocent people, etc. as a result of Assange/WikiLeaks actions…

…nasty, evil, man for exposing that, what had been reported was contradicted by the recorded facts, inconvenient truth, etc. call it what you will!

I know (or have read) of the reaction when one challenges the belief system that someone holds dear. That are blind to the most straightforward illustrations of the key factors, avoid questions that provoke contrary thought and become more entrenched in-spite of the weight of contradictory evidence. All of a sudden I am wondering why I am writing this knowing what I know!

But still I am amazed when the emerging through the, tried-and-tested, cynical smokescreen of political outrage is the messenger rather than the perpetrator!!!

These Wikileaks documents thus raise the most fundamental question citizens can ask themselves: to what extent to citizens of a democracy owe their allegiance to autocratic leaders who obtain the consent of their citizens through massive duplicity? And to what extent can they trust either their judgement or their decency?

Americans may find themselves increasingly pondering such questions in coming years, as economic decline and future terrorist attacks cause U.S. elites to bring home the authoritarian mindset that has caused so much damage abroad. It seems certain that American democracy will face greater challenges than at any time since the country’s founding.

But that is a long-term question. The key question now is whether Americans can hear the sound of suffering their leaders are causing abroad, as at this very moment innocent men, women and children are being murdered and maimed in what the Red Cross describes as the greatest civilian carnage since the Russians invaded 30 years ago.

Julian Assange should be applauded not persecuted for hearing the sound of their suffering.

Do we?

BP Report: Black Swan …or just a bird covered in oil!?

Does complexity guarantee “system failure”? (revisited)

Even before this event became highly politicized it was shaping up to stand as a 21st Century monument to a culture of Corporate mismanagement: Economy before ecology! The incentives to “cut corners” were simply too great. I have argued before that, all too often, sound risk management comes a poor second to generating profits.

It tends to be “dressed up” as compromise…until it hits the fan!

Anyone care to draw a line?: Global financial meltdown – Toyota – Gulf of Mexico spill – ???

This was/is a hugely complex operation requiring enormous financial and human resource. A tight chain of command communicating and coordinating across several companies. Undertaking a range of interdependent functions as part of a feat of engineering that would not have been possible just a few years ago. NO SCOPE TO TAKE CHANCES, TO CUT CORNERS OR TO BE ABLE TO CONTEMPLATE GAMBLING WITH THE ECOSYSTEM OF A VAST AREA.

Even a company like Toyota (Lexus), whose reputation for quality was well-deserved, were tempted by the lure of $100m per annum savings! I’m sure someone better informed than me has already worked out what their direct financial losses have been, in addition to fines, settlements and the long lasting reputational damage for a proud brand.

BP said in a statement that the report, like its own investigation, had found the accident was the result of multiple causes, involving multiple companies.

WikiLeaks update: Fascinating video documentary

Understand them or not, like them or loathe them, support them or not I suggest that gaining an in depth understanding FOR YOURSELF, of what Assange and co. are trying to bring about…and why, has got to be better than relying upon mainstream media channels. Particularly when news is non-news depending upon Political whim or agenda.

I have listened to some passionate Americans  who feel Assange is anti-American. I do understand the sentiment and, perhaps, how it may have come about but I think that after watching some of the harrowing footage on this documentary some may rethink just who is more anti-American, Assange or its own civil servants!

Anti-institutional abuses [of trust, office, global citizens…]
